[November 28, 2024] The Manitoba government’s throne speech, outlining key priorities for the upcoming year, passed in the legislature this afternoon, Nov. 28, Premier Wab Kinew announced today.

“Every day, we measure our government’s success by how much Manitobans are free to pursue a good life,” said Kinew. “With our government’s second speech from the throne, we’re moving in a good direction that will make life better for all Manitobans.”

The throne speech, delivered on Nov. 19, laid out next steps to continue making progress on the government’s top priorities including health care, affordability and public safety.

Major commitments highlighted in the throne speech included 800 more hip and knee surgeries, a freeze on Manitoba Hydro rates starting in January and a new public safety strategy. The throne speech also announced applications for Manitoba’s new plastic health card will open this year and a new mother and child bison statue will be commissioned for the front lawn of the legislative grounds.

Additionally, the government announced its plan to introduce Nello’s Law, a piece of legislation that would enshrine the current universal school food program into law permanently. This would keep any future government from cutting this program, noted the premier. The name is in reference to Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Nello Altomare, who advocated for and brought in this program in 2024.
